Apple could finally be nearing an update to its 2019 Pro Display XDR, and while rumors are basically non-existent, new code in macOS Tahoe suggests a built-in webcam could be coming.
Apple released the $5,000 Pro Display XDR in 2019 and hasn't touched it since. The Studio Display came along in the meantime as a much more affordable option.
However, there has been little evidence of another Pro Display XDR in the pipeline since 2022. A code delve on Monday is the latest small morsel in a quiet rumor environment supporting a refresh.
According to code discovered by 9to5Mac in macOS 26.1 Tahoe beta 3, a built-in camera could be coming in an updated Pro Display XDR. It references a camera and a Desk View camera, which could be referencing Apple's Center Stage camera.
Apple has added a Center Stage camera to its MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iMac, and Studio Display in recent years. It is a 12MP webcam that includes an ultra-wide viewing mode to show the desktop in a call, called Desk View.
The Pro Display XDR is the last product in Apple's lineup that hasn't been upgraded with the feature, though the original didn't have a webcam at all. An updated model could have a 8K, 32-inch display.
Speculation and wishcasting look to OLED, ProMotion, and more for the model, but rumors have been quiet recently. The only indication that Apple is currently working on a monitor that isn't the Studio Display is a model number J527 found in code, which may be referring to a next-generation Pro Display XDR.
Waiting for M5 Ultra Mac Pro
There's a chance that Apple is preparing for an announcement, especially since the Mac Pro is due for an upgrade as well. Apple's tower PC is still running an M2 processor, so timing-wise, the company is in an awkward spot.
It could reveal an M3 Ultra Mac Pro and upgraded Pro Display XDR in October or November, just as the base M5 is revealed. Or, Apple could wait until mid-2026 and reveal the Mac Pro with M5.
The M3 Ultra was released in March 2025 with the Mac Studio, so it's not exactly old, but unless the M5 Ultra is more than a year away, it seems odd to update the Mac Pro with M3 Ultra now. If that was the plan, Apple could have updated it in March as well.
There's always the chance that Apple could announce an updated Pro Display XDR via a press release without touching the Mac Pro. However, the expensive display is meant to be paired with the Mac Pro, so releasing it now with an increasingly outdated and outpaced Mac Pro would also be an odd move.
We expect that Apple will wait until mid-2026 to reveal the M5 Ultra Mac Pro and updated Pro Display XDR. The lack of rumors around an imminent release and the code appearance indicate it is coming, but not in the next month with other products.
