The 20th-anniversary iPhone will have a curved metal casing matching the glass as well as an even smaller Dynamic Island than the iPhone 18 Pro, a questionable leaker has claimed.

Apple has long been rumored to be bringing out a revamped iPhone for its 20th anniversary in 2027. When it comes to how that revamp will happen, it seems that a curved design is the strongest rumor about its appearance.

In a pair of tweets on March 30 and March 31, leaked @phonefuturist posted to X about the anniversary smartphone. In the first post, they said it will have a 1.1mm frame with a rounded design that will seamlessly-match the "quad curve design" of the display.

It is unclear what they mean by a "1.1mm frame," but it probably refers to the difference between the exterior edge of the chassis and where the bezel of the display itself starts. It is improbable to mean that the frame will be 1.1mm thick, as that would be a minimally-protective design choice.

That post includes an image that seems like it is a side-on render of the iPhone. However, it seems to have been taken from elsewhere.

The image has a line pointing to the corner of the device, as if it is stemming from a label or a description elsewhere in the image. That element is not visible, as the image is very tightly cropped.

Initial searches for the image haven't revealed where it originally came from.

Camera tech

The second of the two posts deals with the camera on the front of the device, and how it will appear on the display itself.

According to the leaker, Apple apparently tried Samsung's Under Panel Camera (UPC) approach to hide the camera sensor and make a full-screen device with no interruptions. However, Apple apparently didn't deem the camera quality to be good enough to beat UDC (Under Display Camera), the leaker claims.

The mentions of UPC and UDC make the leaker's post a bit confusing, as the two mean practically the same thing. It's a camera that is placed under the display panel, hidden from view but still capable of working due to a regional reduction in pixel density.

The leaker continues that this means the anniversary iPhone will instead have a smaller Dynamic Island than usual. This will seemingly be even smaller than the one purportedly on the way in the iPhone 18 Pro.

Watchers beware

While @phonefuturist is a relatively unknown leaker, they have had some experience providing leaks on Samsung devices. This is also not the first time that the account has discussed Apple's future plans.

Back in January, it claimed Apple will use a flat OLED under quad-curved glass "to fake zero bezels." It would also be able to avoid cut-outs, improve UDC somehow, and manage edge touches.

They also shared a conversation, purportedly with unnamed engineers about Apple's decision to use curved glass.

To the leaker's credit, there was some support to the curved glass rumor. Former display analyst Ross Young added that this news would be good for iPhone glass producer Corning, lending credibility to it being accurate.

However, observers closely watching the anniversary iPhone rumors should still remain wary. It's over a year before Apple is expected to release the smartphone, and therefore still quite early for rumors to solidify, especially from a relatively unproven leak source.
