The Charlie Kirk assassination drove Apple to postpone the release of a politically charged series called "The Savant." The decision led to pushback, but a new release has been set for July 2026.
The more products and services that Apple offers, the more likely it is to cross paths with modern events. While Apple had nothing to do with the murder of Charlie Kirk, it felt the need to push a show's debut that hit a little too close to home.
According to a report from Variety, The Savant will finally debut in July 2026, nearly a year from its original air date. Apple hasn't updated its release date information on the website, but the news comes direct from show lead Jessica Chastain.
When the show was first pulled, Chastain was outspoken about the decision and shared that she wasn't "aligned" with Apple TV on the matter.
"I've never shied away from difficult subjects, and while I wish this show wasn't so relevant, unfortunately it is," she shared on social media. "The Savant is about the heroes who work every day to stop violence before it happens, and honoring their courage feels more urgent than ever."
The plot of the show is centered around Chastain's character as she infiltrates online hate groups in an effort to stop domestic extremists before they act. While the show clearly opposes political violence, its trailer directly calls out specific data seemingly from the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS).
Between 1994 and 2020 there were 893 attacks conducted by groups or people classified as extremists. What the trailer didn't say directly is that there has been a sharp rise in far-right terrorism that significantly outpaced terrorism from other types of perpetrators.
The numbers of right-wing attacks increased sharply from 2014 through 2020. The study correctly assessed that right-wing extremism would escalate over the next year, culminating in extremists storming the Capitol on January 6, 2021 in an effort to overturn the election.
What the trailer showed, but didn't say out loud, was a lot of imagery utilized by right-wing extremist groups. Clearly, The Savant was going to deal with charged topics that were made a little too real by the assassination of the controversial right-winged commentator.
Apple likely didn't want to release something that could be taken as direct commentary on a recent event. The company also withheld the third season of Tehran more than a year until January 9, 2026 due to ongoing conflicts, though it is set to return for season 4.
