Now that Apple has announced the iPhone Air, Apple execs are eager to talk about it — but there's one question they're still not ready to tackle.
On Wednesday, two of Apple's top executives sat down with Tom's Guide and Tech Radar writers to talk iPhones. Specifically, the first-in-its-line iPhone Air.
This time around, Apple's head of worldwide marketing, Greg "Joz" Joswiak, and Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering, John Ternus, were in the hot seat. The pair tackled questions about the reasons for creating it, the challenges Apple faced, and, of course, durability.
During the interview, Joz even challenged the journalists to try to bend his iPhone Air. Of course, neither could, which is exactly the point that Apple is trying to prove.
Afterward, Tom's Guide writer Mark Spoonauer almost asks the one question that seems to be on everyone's mind: is the iPhone Air a preview of the rumored iPhone Fold?
What he actually asks the executives, though, is what they think about foldable phones as a concept. And, while clever, neither executive is willing to play ball.
"I'd rather focus on what we have here today," Joz responds. "We got enough to talk about, stuff that's real."
So, that's Apple's official answer for now. Don't worry about things that could exist in the future, but instead focus on what's right in front of you. That's a pretty typical response from Apple, and is almost as common as analysts getting shut down with "we don't comment on unannounced projects" during earnings calls.
A folding iPhone is the worst-kept secret in Apple's history. It's coming, it's just a matter of when.
