The iPhone 18 Pro could feature a noticeably different glass section on the rear, according to an early, but sketchy rumor.

Apple has just unveiled the iPhone 17 Pro at its "Awe Dropping" event on September 9, but we already have new claims about its successor. The iPhone 18 Pro, set to debut in 2026, is expected to resemble the design of the current iPhone 17 Pro, albeit with one notable exception if a new rumor is correct.

We'll likely see the same 6.3-inch display size, rectangular camera plateau, and triangular camera alignment on the rear of the device. However, leaker Digital Chat Station, writing in Chinese, on Weibo, says that the iPhone 18 Pro back glass will have a "slightly transparent design."

It's not entirely clear what that means, though, as the leaker did not provide additional details. Translucent glass could offer a view of the MagSafe charging coils, allowing for a new look at the iPhone 18 Pro.

Transparent iPhone backplates have been available for years as third-party customization options. Still, it would be an unusual move for Apple to implement this on its high-end iPhone models.

Given that the source material is in Chinese, it's also possible that "transparent" in this case could actually mean something entirely different. The supposed back glass changes are mentioned alongside alleged improvements to the vapor chamber cooling system, so transparent could refer to heat conduction.

The Weibo post says the iPhone 18 Pro will feature a vapor chamber cooling setup made of stainless steel. More thermally conductive back glass could provide better heat dissipation, if that's what the leaker was trying to say.

The iPhone 18 Pro is still a year away at the time of writing, and is likely in the Proto1 stage of development, based on prior releases. This means that there is still plenty of room for hardware-related changes and design alterations, and Apple is no stranger to either.

For reference, Apple tested five different backplate designs for the iPhone 16e. Similarly, multiple variations of the iPhone 16 backplate were created before the device reached mass production.

There's also the chance the rumor could be referring to testing transparent glass as engineering samples, only on select iPhone 18 Pro test units. The design change may not make it far enough into development to reach end consumers, either.

Digital Chat Station has been somewhat accurate in the past, although that may be a byproduct of the sheer volume of leaks shared by this type of social media account. They were correct about the camera bar design of the iPhone 17, but were wrong about Dynamic Island UI changes.

There's not much to see behind the back glass except for the back of the battery compartment and the new aluminum unibody shell. Apple could use transparent glass to show off charging coils in a unique design around the Apple logo, but transparency isn't exactly a part of modern Apple design.

We're rating this as "unlikely" simply because the premise of the rumor seems to be "transparent back glass." Whatever the rumor may be trying to convey, literal transparency seems unlikely.
