Apple has acquired the rights to Jason Segel's upcoming psychological thriller "Sponsor," marking the streaming service's latest high-profile pickup.

Jason Segel, known for his roles in "How I Met Your Mother" and "Forgetting Sara Marshall," has already brought one project, the critically acclaimed dramady "Shrinking," to Apple TV. Now, he's gearing up to do it again.

On Wednesday, Apple announced that it had acquired the rights to Segel's new film venture, "Sponsor." The film is described as a psychological thriller, born from an original idea co-written by Segel and James Ponsoldt.

"Sponsor" follows a man named Peter who faces a life-changing choice after a drunk-driving accident: prison or a recovery program. When he reluctantly enters the program, he crosses paths with Peter, an enigmatic man he believes to be the answer to his prayers.

Segel and Ponsoldt will also serve as executive producers. Segel is set to play Peter, but no other casting details are available at this time.

"Sponsor" will be produced by Platinum Dunes, the Michael Bay-founded production company known primarily for creating horror films. Ponsoldt, who has also directed episodes of "Shrinking", is set to direct.

Apple recently has begun Apple TV, choosing to drop the plus from the end of its former name. Currently, the Apple TV+ name persists on the tv.apple.com
