Apple has released an update for iOS 18.7.2 and iPadOS 18.7.2, making security fixes that impact older devices like the iPhone XR and iPhone XS.

Apple's main focus is on improving its current-gen operating systems. However, it also periodically releases updates for previous operating system generations.

On Wednesday, that was the case for iPhone and iPad users trapped on iOS 18. The update to iOS 18.7.2 and iPadOS 18.7.2. These bring the affected models up from the previous update, iOS 18.7.1 and iPadOS 18.7.1.

iPadOS 18.7.2 is build number 22H124, which is shared by iPadOS 18.7.2.

The updates don't have much in the way of release notes. Apple just says that they provide "important security fixes and is recommended for all users."

Apple frequently releases the updates for devices that cannot be updated to the newest operating system releases, often after support for the hardware has been dropped. In this case, the update is aimed chiefly at the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and the iPad 7.

The updates don't tend to include new features, but do add compatibility support with new Apple hardware and fixes security issues.

To update the devices, users must open the Settings app, then select General, followed by Software Update. They then select the relevant update's "Update Now" button.
