Apple TV's "F1: the Movie" has added an Academy Award win for Best Sound to its critical acclaim and over $600 million at the box office.
Following its four Oscar nominations — including for Best Picture — "F1" has beaten fellow nominees including "Sinners" and "One Battle After Another" for the Best Sound award at the 98th Academy Awards.
It's yet another win for the film's sound team of Gareth John, Al Nelson, Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, Gary A. Rizzo and Juan Peralta. The team previously won back to back awards from the Association of Motion Picture Sound and the British Academy of Film and Television Arts.
"We want to celebrate [producer] Jerry Bruckheimer and [director, co-writer] Joe Kosinski and especially Apple," said Al Nelson,in the Oscars press room after winning the award.
"This film came out in June, it didn't hit PVOD [Pay Video on Demand] until fall, it didn't stream on Apple until December," he continued. "This film was made by filmmakers who embrace and celebrate theatrical experiences, and it was made by a studio who promotes the theatrical experience."
"F1: the Movie" was beaten to the Best Picture Oscar by "One Battle After Another," which also beat it to win the Best Film Editing award. "F1" lost Best Visual Effects to "Avatar: Fire and Ash."
This win for "F1" means Apple TV has now won five Oscars. In 2023, it jointly won one with the BBC for Best Animated Short Film with "The Boy, the Mole, the Fox and the Horse," while in 2022, "CODA" won three — including Best Picture.
Separately, Apple TV now also has the US rights to the real-life F1 races. Its debut race reportedly beat all of Apple's expectations.
