Apple CarPlay users will now be able to communicate with ChatGPT on-the-go, using only their voice. An app update and iOS 26.4 are required.

With the release of the iOS 26.4 update on March 24, Apple introduced support for AI agents within CarPlay. To be more specific, the iPhone maker released a new CarPlay entitlement category for voice-driven conversational apps.

The move effectively enabled third-party AI to function within CarPlay, reducing users' reliance on Siri. OpenAI's ChatGPT has now become one of the first AI-related applications to take advantage of the new CarPlay entitlement, which is only delivered with Apple's approval.

Relative to ChatGPT on the web, the CarPlay experience is somewhat limited, and that's by design. Apple only lets CarPlay users talk to ChatGPT with their voice, and voice-operated conversational apps can't display various images or text on-screen, so as to not distract the driver.

Voice-based conversational apps are limited to three Apple-approved template screens, including the main app screen. This is to prevent sprawling menu trees and layered UI flows from occupying the CarPlay screen.

ChatGPT, when used via CarPlay, is task-driven, meaning it's not there for open-ended conversations. Apple's CarPlay documentation prioritizes user safety, and emphasizes the point that unpredictability from voice-driven conversational apps isn't welcome on the road.

To talk to OpenAI's ChatGPT through Apple CarPlay, users will need an iPhone running iOS 26.4 or later and ensure the ChatGPT app is on the latest version. Apple's own virtual assistant, meanwhile, is expected to receive a significant update with iOS 27, which is set to debut at WWDC on June 8.
