Amazon adds AirPlay 2 and HomeKit to Toshiba, Insignia Fire TVs

Amazon on Wednesday announced AirPlay 2 and HomeKit integration for two Fire TV edition television sets from manufacturers Toshiba and Insignia.

AirPlay 2 and HomeKit are now available on the 2020 Toshiba 4K UHD Smart Fire TV with Dolby Vision and the 2020 Insignia 4K UHD Smart TV, Amazon said in a press release. Users must download and install an update to use the new features.

With the new capability, users can stream, share and control content from an iOS or macOS device. Compatible Fire TVs can be connected to synced multi-room speaker systems, mirror video or on-screen content, listen to Apple Music, and more.

HomeKit support enables TV control, like power and volume, via Siri or the Home app on iPhone, iPad, or Mac. To control Fire TV with Siri, the device must first be added as a HomeKit accessory.

Amazon is starting to play nice with Apple after the online retail giant banned Apple TV from its store in a competitive push for Fire TV and Prime Video. A detente began last year when Apple agreed to allow Amazon to bypass its standard 30% App Store fee, a move that brought in-app purchases to the Prime Video app.

Apple has steadily built out its catalog of AirPlay 2 and HomeKit compatible devices and in April expanded support for Roku streaming devices. At the same time, the tech giant nabbed — likely purchased — a spot on Roku's Voice Remote Pro for Apple TV+.
