ChatGPT may soon help iPhone and Mac users in another way, with an upcoming integration potentially allowing the AI service to manage your Apple Music playlists.

OpenAI's ChatGPT already provides users with many different services to benefit their digital lives. But as part of a larger expansion, it seems ChatGPT will soon be able to dictate what songs you listen to on Apple Music.

A Tuesday Substack post by Fidji Simo, the CEO of Applications at OpenAI, discusses the ways that ChatGPT will improve image generation via a new dedicated entrypoint. In the latter sections, the post goes on to state that there will be an expansion of app support within ChatGPT.

Earlier in 2025, it introduced support for apps from companies including Booking.com, Canva, Coursera, Expedia, Figma, Spotify, and Zillow. More apps are set to be added to that directory, with Apple Music among the list.

Others mentioned include tools from Adobe, Airtable, Clay, Lovable, OpenTable, Replit, and Salesforce. Simo also says that developers will also be able to submit their apps for review.

The integration will apparently happen "soon."

AI playlists?

The posting doesn't go into detail about what ChatGPT will do with Apple Music, but it's something that may be similar to what already exists.

There is already an integration with Apple Music rival Spotify, which allows ChatGPT to personalize a user's music. Once logged into ChatGPT, users can connect their Spotify account by mentioning the service.

Prompts can be created to generate playlists depending on what the user specifically wants. For example, a playlist for a morning commute, songs similar to an existing playlist, or for a particular mood.

The integration also uses a user's existing history, listening patterns, and favorite artists to help users find more music and podcast suggestions. Playlists can then be selected to open in Spotify directly.

Apple Music already has a number of APIs available for developers to create playlists in third-party apps. It seems unlikely that ChatGPT will gain much more access than it already can with its Spotify connection.

A bigger Apple connection

ChatGPT's interest in controlling Apple Music playback for users makes sense, beyond the existing utility it has with Spotify. Indeed, ChatGPT already touches quite a few areas of the Apple ecosystem.

This chiefly includes the integration with Siri, so that ChatGPT can handle complicated queries for the user instead of Apple's digital assistant. In iOS 26, Apple expanded the integration so that Image Playground could defer to ChatGPT for user requests.

There is also the developer assistance features, with ChatGPT able to edit code in Xcode, both directly and via a connection in the macOS ChatGPT app. In July, OpenAI added a record mode feature to ChatGPT on macOS, so paid users can record and transcribe audio directly.

There have also been indications that ChatGPT wants to access other bits of Apple's empire too. In December, the Apple Health icon was found buried in the ChatGPT app for iOS, possibly in advance of it gaining access to a user's health and fitness data.
