Rumors have consistently said the iPhone 18 Pro Max will have under-display Face ID, allowing for a much smaller display cutout, which has now been detailed by a leaker.

Rumors have consistently discussed under-display Face ID for years, but it has never arrived. However, it may finally be time for it to be introduced with the iPhone 18 Pro.

In a leak first discovered by MacRumors, Ice Universe has shared the expected dimensions of the newly reduced Dynamic Island. They say it will be reduced by 35% from 20.76mm to 13.49mm.

The image provided shows an off-centered Dynamic Island, which could be deliberate because that's what the final product looks like, or could be an error made in haste. Apple tends to attempt some kind of symmetry in its devices and rarely places objects like that so awkwardly.

A smaller island

The glass cutout for the selfie camera and any other necessary sensors is hidden behind the Dynamic Island. Without that bit of software, there would be a distinct dot for the selfie camera and a separate oval cutout for sensors.

The current Dynamic Island is quite expansive by comparison

If Apple were able to fit all the components besides the selfie camera under the display, the cutout would simply be a circle and be shown as much here. Instead, it seems there are still some sensors above the glass.

If this is accurate, Apple and developers will have more space to provide Live Activity data in the Dynamic Island. It could mean a kind of 2.0 update for that software and act as an exclusive feature to draw customers to the device.

Nearly every leaker agrees that if there is a change to the Dynamic Island, it's that it is smaller. Jon Prosser, returning from a long hiatus after being sued by Apple, shared a Hail Mary of a leak that was quickly panned.

His concept showed the selfie camera in the corner with zero Face ID components visible. However, it seems his source or his interpretation of the data had the sensor flipped, as the under-display Face ID components are rumored to be on the left side and the selfie camera in the center.

It won't be long before more information starts leaking about Apple's fall iPhone lineup. The iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Fold are expected in the fall, but there are no guarantees.

Once these products enter production, supply chain sources will begin confirming what exactly should launch in the fall. There's still a chance we'll see a more normal iPhone launch without a folding device and with the standard iPhone 18 present.

For now, we've at least got an idea of what to expect for the new cutout and Dynamic Island. Ice Universe has a decent history and this leak lines up with others, so this is rated as possible.
