Apple's focus in the current release cycle is on backend work that doesn't affect Apple Vision Pro, but visionOS 26.5 has been released with bug fixes.

There are always some kind of updates to apply to an operating system, even if they don't change anything for the user. That's the case for the latest visionOS release.

Apple has released visionOS 26.5 with barebones release notes that only mention bug fixes and feature optimizations. The latest OS updates primarily focus on background changes that prepare the systems for future features.

Even though many of these changes primarily apply to iPhone users, they affect the rest of the product ecosystem as well.

visionOS 26.5 is build number 23O471.

Background updates

The OS 26.5 updates lay the groundwork for Apple Maps to have search ads. Apple Vision Pro runs Apple Maps as a compatible iPad app, which means the ads will likely appear there too.

Apple has also enabled a new App Store subscription option that enables annual discounts with monthly payments. Users will have to commit to 12 months of payments, but it comes in cheaper than simply paying monthly.

Apple Vision Pro does have Messages, which means it can send RCS messages as well. The OS 26.5 release continues the work towards getting that chat standard fully end-to-end encrypted, though it isn't yet.

Still no new Apple Intelligence

Those awaiting the new Apple Intelligence features like a more contextual Siri will have to wait a little longer. While some rumors pointed to the spring for a release of the new Apple Foundation Models trained by Gemini, there still aren't any signs that it is coming.

Apple could release the new AI at any time via a backend update, but that seems unlikely due to the proximity of WWDC. Expect the new AI features we've been waiting for to be revealed during the developer event.

Even without any user-facing upgrades, users should install visionOS 26.5 as soon as is reasonable for the security patches and bug fixes. Navigate to Settings -> General -> Software Update to manually install visionOS 26.5 if it hasn't installed automatically already.
