Apple has launched its Tap to Pay on iPhone feature in five more EU countries, the slow rollout that began wit the US in 2022.
It was in May 2022 that US iPhone users gained the ability to pay other iPhone users without any extra hardware. Since then, it has slowly begun available outside the US, with the UK getting it in 2023, as did France, and Japan in May 2024.
Now in a statement to AppleInsider, Apple has announced Tap to Pay on iPhone is now also available in five more countries:
- Austria
- Czech Republic
- Ireland
- Romania
- Sweden
Apple says that the payment platforms Adyen, SumUp and Viva.com, support the feature across all five countries. Then Stripe supports it in all but Romania.
In total, the rollout to the new countries involves 14 payment platforms across the regions. Tap to Pay on iPhone works there with contactless credit and debit cards from providers such as Visa, American Express, Discover, and Mastercard.
"As more and more consumers are tapping to pay with digital wallets and credit cards," Jennifer Bailey, Apple's vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, said at the 2022 launch in the US, "Tap to Pay on iPhone will provide businesses with a secure, private, and easy way to accept contactless payments and unlock new checkout experiences using the power, security, and convenience of iPhone."
Tap to Pay on iPhone is reportedly rolling out to these new countries over the next few weeks.
