Cloud AI infrastructure lead Frank Chu is the sixth Apple executive to leave for Meta, but may be one of the last as Meta stops hiring for its AI teams.
The so-called AI brain drain has seen executives depart Apple for incredible pay packages at Meta since June. There's no word about how these departures actually impact Apple or its AI plans and teams, but they exist.
According to a report from Bloomberg, Frank Chu is the latest to leave Apple for Meta. He was the lead for AI teams focused on cloud infrastructure, training, and search.
Meta has also hired Ruoming Pang, Tom Gunter, Mark Lee, Bowen Zhang, and Yun Zhu away from Apple. The hiring spree isn't just targeting Apple, of course, it has impacted many companies as Meta attempts to achieve artificial superintelligence.
However, Meta's spending spree has come to an abrupt halt after buying up a bunch of talent with nothing to show for it in the short term. There is no telling if Meta can actually achieve the now-fictional artificial superintelligence.
After changing its name to reflect its pursuit of the metaverse, which failed spectacularly, it is now spending money at an incredible pace to achieve something that may not even be possible. It hopes to accelerate its chances by throwing money and talent at the problem.
Apple, on the other hand, isn't openly pursuing the fictional technology. Its efforts in AI have focused on simple tools that help the user while remaining private and secure.
If there has been any impact to Apple's Apple Intelligence efforts, there's little chance of knowing without some kind of internal leak. The anonymous tipsters sharing these executive departures haven't said much outside of the news itself.
Meanwhile, Apple Intelligence will continue to evolve over time as its team is much larger than six people. The new LLM-powered Siri is expected to launch in early 2026.
