Rumors suggested Apple had given up on iPhone Air due to one not being prepped for 2026, but that was apparently never the case. A future model with an improved chipset and longer battery is in the works.

The iPhone Air may not be Apple's most popular model, but it doesn't have to be. The device was a replacement for Apple's worst-selling iPhone Plus line and serves as a proof of concept more than anything.

According to the Power On newsletter, the iPhone Air was never expected to have a second iteration in 2026, so rumors of any delay are inaccurate. A future model is in the works, but the focus is on a better chipset, not necessarily a second camera system.

The new chip would be built on a 2 nanometer process, which would aid in improving battery life. There are no indications of a structural change, and adding a second camera, as rumored, would likely require a redesign.

iPhone Air's unknown future

A previous rumor suggested Apple had decided to skip a 2026 iPhone Air update after poor sales, which seemed sketchy at best. That rumor was updated to suggest that Apple had delayed the product to ensure there was time for a redesign that would add a second camera.

Either way, AppleInsider always took issue with the word "delay," as it was apparent Apple was never intending to update iPhone Air annually. The name lacks the 17 that would make it part of the regular update cycle, and other rumors suggest the iPhone Air is a prelude to iPhone Fold.

Future iPhone Air could get a second rear camera

We don't expect the product line to go away entirely if and when the iPhone Fold launches. Instead, it seems Apple has positioned iPhone Air as a fork in the lineup to give customers a wider variety of choice.

The base iPhone has a set of competitive features. Then, up the line, customers have to choose between the thicker, heavier, feature-packed iPhone Pro or the thin, light, compromised iPhone Air.

Then, at the top of each line, there's the flagship iPhone Pro Max or the still compromised but unique offering of iPhone Fold positioned above the iPhone Air. So, it seems highly unlikely that Apple is abandoning the product or even delaying it — the release timeline is just different than the other iPhone lines.

It seems 2027 could be quite the year for Apple's iPhone lineup. An iPhone Fold is expected in 2026, then an iPhone Air 2 and an anniversary edition called iPhone 20 in 2027.

Whatever Apple's plans, expect iPhone Air to be a part of them for the foreseeable future.
