iPhone 13 comparison, in-depth on Apple Watch Series 7, and iPad mini on the Appleinsider podcast

On the AppleInsider podcast this week we dive into the details of Apple's new devices and decide if the Apple Watch Series 7 is worth an upgrade, plus best practices for upgrading to the new iPhone 13.

Despite several leaks missing the mark, especially ones of a flat-sided design for Apple Watch Series 7 and a definite launch for AirPods 3, Apple announced a great deal at its "California Streaming" event. We examine the lot, including what's really significant and what isn't, plus what is worth upgrading to — and perhaps what may not be.

Starting with the 10.2-inch iPad which now has a starting storage capacity of 64GB and brings Center Stage to Apple's base-model iPad.

Then the iPad mini received the biggest redesign of the event, gaining iPad Air's design language, Touch ID power button, and 5G cellular connectivity. While the A15 Bionic processor will be under clocked when compared to the iPhone 13 lineup, and its 5G cellular activity lacks mmWave compatibility, the new iPad mini is a compelling device.

Apple Watch Series 7 received the fewest amount of changes, using a chip similar to last year's model and lacking any new sensors. While the decrease in bezel allows for 20% more screen real estate, our hosts debate whether an upgrade from the Series 6 is really worth the price.

Next, we go in-depth on the iPhone 13 camera system including the new Cinematic mode for video. The A15 Bionic is 21% faster in CPU speed and the base storage capacity is 128GB, but on the other hand, this year's model will be slightly thicker and heavier when compared to the iPhone 12.

Unlike last year, the Wide and Ultra Wide lenses on the iPhone 13 differ from the iPhone 13 Pro. Users who opt for the Pro models will gain a wider aperture across all three lenses, and its Telephoto lens is now 3x zoom. Thankfully, sensor-shift stabilization which only came on the iPhone 12 Pro Max model comes standard on the Wide angle lens for the entire iPhone 13 lineup.

We round out the show with strategies for upgrading to the iPhone 13, the benefits of Apple's iPhone upgrade program, and the Epic Games v. Apple verdict.
